What is Instantly Ageless?

Instantly Ageless new packaging

Good things come in small packages? You can certainly count on that!

Instantly Ageless by Jeunesse is one of the star products in their lineup of anti-aging skin care solutions. This is a potent anti-wrinkle microcream designed to target wrinkles, fine lines and puffy eye bags, diminishing their appearance — in record speed — to give you youthful looks.

The video demo clearly illustrates what this peptide-based cream can do to hide the visible effects of aging. If this cream is so effective against troublesome bags under the eyes, imagine what it can do for those not-so-glaring problems such as lines and wrinkles.

This super anti-aging formula claims the following benefits:

  • Dramatic reduction of appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and pores
  • Almost-instant erasure of puffiness under the eyes and dark circles
  • Improvement in complexion with more even skin texture, restoring skin to its optimum appearance
  • Super-fast results which can last up to 8 hours

The magic of this skin cream lies in its special ingredients, of which one is said to mimic the effects of Botox in tightening facial skin. Some people call this product “Botox in a bottle”, referring to other similar solutions that promise a “no needles” benefit. An example of such is Skinception’s Eyelasticity — read our comparison review here.

The demo shows the product packaged in plastic vials. This has recently been changed to tear-away sachets — as shown in the product photo — to streamline manufacturing. There is a slight drawback: saving left-over cream for subsequent application requires some ingenuity.

What Are the Ingredient Inside the Cream?

Other than water, the ingredients used in this breakthrough cream by Jeunesse include the following. We ran some quick research to gather interesting nuggets of info to share with you…

Sodium Silicate

This inorganic salt, which is a white powder compound, dissolves readily in water to produce an alkaline solution. It is mainly used in detergents, water treatment and making paper and construction materials.

Sodium silicate is used in cosmetics to control the acidity or pH level of the products.

Magnesium Aluminium Silicate

This is a white chalk-like powder occurring naturally in soil clays. It can also be manufactured industrially.

It’s ability to absorb excess moisture can make liquid skin care formulas less runny. It can also convey a more luxurious feeling by making creams feel thicker.

Makeup tends to be less transparent due to the chalky texture of this compound. Which means fuller coverage to the skin — thus imperfections are better hidden to give a nicer complexion.

The FDA has approved the use of this silicate, in powdered or clay form, in skin care products. It comes with a “Generally Regarded as Safe” listing.

Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8)

Of particular interest is the use of Argireline, a synthetic compound known for its ability to inhibit reactions that make muscles contract or move. According to wikipedia, Argireline is the trade name for Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 and is marketed by Lipotec.

This special ingredient is a hexapeptide derived from SNAP-25, which is a substrate of the Botox toxin. Peptides are chains of amino acids, much like proteins but smaller. On Lipotec’s website, they mention that use of Argireline results in weakened facial contractions and relaxed muscles due to neurotransmitters not being released efficiently. The nett effect is formation of wrinkles becomes inhibited.

The action of Argireline seems to interfere with what goes on naturally in the body, altering the behaviour of chemicals responsible for signalling between neurons. In this respect, it is somewhat similar to what a Botox injection would do to facial muscles; except that it isn’t paralytic. Studies seem to indicate that a small dose of Argireline, as used in skin care products, is both non-toxic and non-invasive.

In Jeunesse’s case, their product contains Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, which is the longer-chain molecule cousin of Acetyl Hexapeptide-3. The effects of the hexapeptide-8 are similar to the -3. However, it does cause a small confusion as to which one should be called Argireline.

Phenoxyethanol

This colorless oily liquid is used as a chemical preservative in skin cream and sunscreen. It is also used in perfume as a fixative; as a topical antiseptic; as insect repellent; in pharmaceuticals; etc.

In terms of safety of this chemical, the FDA has warned about toxicity to infants via ingestion — this may affect the nervous system and cause diarrhea and vomitting. Be mindful after applying creams which contain this preservative, especially what remains on the hands.

Ethylexylglycerin

This ingredient appears to be a significant component in dermatological products. Its main job is that of a preservant enhancer, taking the place of parabens which are suspected carcinogens. It also serves as a skin conditioner and has deodorizing properties.

Yellow 5 (CI 19140)

This is actually tartrazine, a synthetic azo dye used in food (and labelled as E102) for its lemon yellow color. It is also found in cosmetics such as eyeshadow, face powder and lipstick; in such cases, the product label will usually state FD&C Yellow 5 or CI 19140 as the ingredient.

Red 40 (CI 16035)

Also an azo dye, this is known as Allura Red AC; or E129 when used in food. Other names include FD&C Red 40 and CI 16035. This dye is approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics.

Are There Any Known Side Effects?

Simply tear off, put on and start looking younger

Being a very new product on the market, it is unclear if Jeunesse’s anti-wrinkle facial cream can cause side effects. Even the potent ingredient Argireline is a recent discovery with a limited history.

However, checks with the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database showed that some ingredients — sodium silicate, Argireline, phenoxyethanol and Yellow 5 — have an SD score of 3 or 4, suggesting they could be moderately hazardous in terms of health concerns. Red 40 scored a 2, i.e. a low hazard rating. No data was found for magnesium aluminium silicate and ethylexylglycerin.

It is also mentioned in wikipedia that the Yellow 5 azo dye appears to cause allergic and intolerance reactions particularly to persons with asthma or who are aspirin intolerant.

Perhaps the best sources to glean more info on side effects are the online consumer forums and the customer feedback collected by Amazon. But don’t just rely on these; it’s always better to do your own research to educate yourself on safe aesthetic solutions.

Pros and Cons
